HIPs have gone, but devotion to red tape left a trail of damage

HIPS Home Information Pack Has Gone
The Conservatives’ abhorrence of HIPs was well-known, which means that the abolition of the scheme is no surprise.

The speed of the announcement, however, highlights the new Government’s belief that the Home Information Packs were a drag on the recovery of the housing market and served no other purpose but the creation of yet more unnecessary red tape.

As a result buyers who were already suspicious of a dossier of information provided by a seller felt able to disregard the contents of the pack. Everyone is now waiting to see whether more people will be tempted to put their homes up for sale. Outside London the HIP, which cost an average of £500, was regarded as a disincentive to speculative sellers.

We are members of Trustmark, protecting you against fraudsters, rogues and conmenDamp Proof Fraudsters Jailed for 15 Years

The fight against rogue traders and conmen continues with a family of fraudsters recently being jailed for 15 years.

The family-owned company cheated hundreds of elderly and vulnerable homeowners in West Yorkshire out of almost £3million, claiming their properties were suffering from damp and charging, on average, between £2000 and £3000 to have a damp proof course fitted that they did not need.

Where damp proof work was actually carried out, nothing more than water was injected into wall cavities, rather than the required chemicals resulting in six defendants being sentenced for a total of 15 years for gaining money by deception.

Royal Referal

A Royal Referral

The TrustMark office received a call last week from a gentleman who works for the Crown Estate as he had recently bought a house and had unfortunately found he had a number of problems with the property.

He had been advised by the Royal Household in Windsor to contact TrustMark to see how we could help him in dealing with these problems.

It’s good to know TrustMark’s tradesmen are being referred with this seal of approval.

Brit’s Spare Time is a Click Away

We all know that finding a tradesman can be a time-consuming job if you have to ask around friends, family and neighbours or trawl through bulky, old fashioned directories.

But it doesn’t have to be this way because TrustMark now has the largest online database of accredited tradesmen for the repair, maintenance and improvement sector in the UK. And its handy postcode search tool is quick and easy to use and can really help homeowners save time and money.

The fieldwork was undertaken amongst 3,000 in April 2010 by OnePoll on behalf of TrustMark.

THE WATERTIGHT FLOOD BARRIER SYSTEM.

The DWC Group is now proud to announce its partnership with Watertight International Ltd, a company which has researched and developed a kitemark approved Flood Barrier system.

The DWC Group is primarily involved with preserving properties and after a flood it is essential to use the services of a contractor which understands how a property should be repaired and treated to minimise the delay, aggravation and the emotional trauma experienced as a result of flood damage.

At a recent House of Lords presentation given by the company and The Lord Redesdale, the flood barrier system was launched with the Kitemark accreditation.

DWC's Managing Director Malcolm Thornton confirmed that 'the partnership linkup will provide a useful service to all property owners who could be affected by flood damage which will include councils, housing associations, private landlords and of course the private owner!'

REPAIRS TO PRESERVE SOUTHEND PIER continues...

Repairs to Southend Pier Timbers

DWC Contractors & Surveyors are proud to be associated with the continuing restoration works being carried out at Southend’s international iconic pier.

The Grade II listed building which dates back to 1830 and is the longest pleasure pier in the world at 1.341 miles is a true survivor of fires, boat crashes, two world wars and economic decline but Southend Council are committed to ensuring that the benefits of a brisk walk along the Pier enjoying the Southend sea air and a pier train ride will again be shortly open to all.

The timbers forming part of the walkway ramp at the shore end of the pier were found to be in dire need of protection against the ravages of wood rot and DWC’s technicians were called in by Pavehall plc the Council’s contractors to carry out specialist timber preservation work to ensure the longevity of the restoration work.

More repairs to Southend-on-Sea Pier's timbers

The timber joists which could be left insitu were spray coated with an application of Probor DB to the ends and up to one meter along their length. The treatment, which is ideal for use in such high risk areas, is capable of penetrating to the core of the timbers thus providing long term integrity.

DWC Contractors & Surveyors together with its sister company Preservation Treatments (Surrey) Limited provided the necessary specialist technical expertise.

“KEYHOLE SURGERY” STABILISES DENBIGH CASTLE

Phased repairs to Denbigh Castle masonry are required to maintain its present standard and minimise deterioration of the stonework and features. As the Castle is a semi ruin it will obviously suffer from the constant ingress of water and frost which dislodges and causes cracking of the stonework. Denbigh Castle Interior

The origins of Denbigh Castle lie in some 200 years of warfare between the Welsh princes and English kings during the 11th and 12th centuries. Denbigh Castle, dates back to 1282 and sits atop a steep rock outcrop at the heart of the Vale of Clwyd in that part of North Wales between the river Conwy and the Dee estuary. Today Cadw maintains Denbigh Castle and the town walls along with Denbigh Friary, St Hilary’s Chapel and Lord Leicester’s Church.

On this occasion the repair method chosen by DWC / Axis was to stitch the structure using a concealed anchor system. The premier system available is manufactured by Cintec International Ltd based in Newport, South Wales. (www.cintec.co.uk).

Phil Bowdler, Project Manager & Surveyor from DWC Contractors & Surveyors incorporating Axis Stabilisation commented  “The anchors, consisted of stainless steel bars and cementitious and lime grouts which are perfect for this type of "keyhole surgery" repair so often needed on high profile heritage projects. When completed, it is extremely difficult to see where a repair has been undertaken”. Denbigh Castle Exterior

Axis has been involved in many castle, church and other historic structure repairs for almost 20 years. Specifiers have sought out their advice and utilised their skills on many occasions. This phase of repairs to Denbigh Castle is one more successful project to add to an already impressive portfolio.
